Snow Day Decision Making Process As we are currently in the winter season, we would like to take some time to review our procedures for calling snow days. The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities, and we take various factors into consideration when deciding whether to close or delay schools due to inclement weather. We have students that depend on our school for meals and other support services and have to gauge that with student safety. Our decision-making process involves close monitoring of weather forecasts, road conditions, and other relevant information. We collaborate with other school districts in our county regularly and when necessary talk with county support services, transportation services, and our maintenance teams to assess the safety of travel and the condition of school facilities. Key factors in the decision to call a snow day include: 1. Weather Forecasts: We closely track weather forecasts to anticipate the severity and timing of snowfall, ice accumulation, and other weather-related challenges. As we have seen in the past, tracking the timing of storms can be difficult due to many factors that can change in real time. 2. Road Conditions: Our transportation team assesses the condition of roads and determines if roads are passable and school buses can safely navigate the routes. 3. Temperature: Actual temperature and Windchill (real feel) are used in assessing student safety. I have read that many school districts in Michigan use a Windchill of -25 or lower to close. Our district and the other county schools, as well as counties around us, have set a maximum Windchill of -20 or colder as a cut-off point for running school when making this decision. However, other factors may cause the district to use a warmer temperature when deciding to close or delay. 4. Building Safety: We inspect school facilities to ensure that they are safe and accessible for students and staff. This includes addressing issues such as snow and ice removal from walkways and parking lots. On occasions we do receive snow before, during, or after arrival covering sidewalks and other areas around our school. Our crews have many responsibilities, cover some extensive areas, and continue to clear snow and ice as they can during the day. 5. Communication: Once a decision is made, we promptly communicate the information to parents, guardians, and staff through various channels, including school messenger, social media platforms, radio stations, and television stations. In order to provide enough time to reach drivers before routes, these decisions are often made early in the morning. Typically, a decision is made on or before 5:30am. As we have seen in the past, weather can change quickly. On occasion, after buses are on the road, we have encountered snow or slippery conditions that may slow travel. Please understand that the decision to close schools is not taken lightly and we always strive to balance the importance of education with the safety of our school community. To stay informed about school closures, we encourage you to; • Monitor school communication channels, such as local tv, radio or social media platforms, for updates • Ensure your contact information is up to date in our school messenger system in order to receive calls, emails or text messages. • Plan in advance for alternative arrangements in case of a snow day, such as childcare options or remote learning resources. I want to thank parents, students, and staff for their patience and support. As we have said above, closing school is not an easy decision. We balance out the needs of our students with safety when making these decisions. If you have questions, concerns, or would like to talk more about this, please contact the Quincy Superintendent’s office at 517-639-7141.
